Cast Iron vs. Competition Kettlebells

Now that kettlebells have grown in popularity and become a fitness industry buzzword, there are dozens of different types being sold on the internet – which can be daunting for a first-time kettlebell purchaser! But have no fear: this article will shed light on the differences between different types of kettlebells and help you determine which type is right for you. Two of the most common options on the market are cast iron kettlebells and competition kettlebells. Each has a unique set of characteristics ideal for different types of training. Both are incredible tools that will last a lifetime if purchased from a reputable manufacturer

First and foremost, avoid plastic or vinyl kettlebells as well as kettlebells that are cast as two pieces of material. Both competition and cast iron kettlebells are constructed from one piece of steel. This single cast means movements are more stable and you can more reliably swing, clean, and flip your kettlebell without worrying about the base and handle separating. Competition kettlebells are composed of steel, as opposed to cast iron, meaning they are slightly more durable than cast iron kettlebells. However, cast iron kettlebells have more coating options that are not usually available for competition kettlebells. These options include powder coating or cerakote coating, which can increase the durability of your cast iron kettlebell in a way that is on par with competition kettlebells. Both are incredibly durable pieces of equipment that are designed to resist rust, breakage, and chipping
Competition kettlebells are universally color-coded to signify the different weights, so you can find the weight you need at a glance. Competition kettlebells are all the same size regardless of weight, which means they are ideal for practicing highly technical movements like the Turkish Get Up or high-repetition exercises such as the Snatch. The handles of competition kettlebells are uniform as well. The window of the bell handle has more of a rectangular shape, and the handle diameter is smaller than cast iron kettlebells. The reason for this is a smaller handle reduces grip fatigue, which is incredibly important in competitive kettlebell lifting. Competition kettlebell handles are more porous than cast iron handles, which allows them to absorb chalk better, which is also essential for high-repetition exercises.

Cast iron kettlebells are often preferred by beginners because most beginners start with movements that require two hands on the handle – such as deadlifts, two arm swings, goblet squats – which can be difficult with competition kettlebells if you have big hands. Additionally, getting two kettlebells between your legs for double kettlebell lifts with competition kettlebells is more challenging because of their larger size. However, movements where you need stability on the floor – such as push ups, plank rows, dips, etc – work better with competition bells, especially if you are using lighter weights. Competition kettlebells have wide and flat bases that make them perfect for floor work. Light cast iron kettlebells have small bases, which can be unstable when putting your full weight on them on the floor.

If you plan to do high-repetition sets in your workouts or do a lot of focused technique work, the competition kettlebell is your best bet. If you prefer to build strength and power at a lower price point, you should consider purchasing a cast iron kettlebell. And remember that the purpose of both types of kettlebells is to utilize them for total body workouts that build lean muscle and increase cardiovascular endurance – and that can be done with either type of kettlebell.

Product Review: UClips Universal Gym Clips

Introduction: The UClips Universal Gym Clips are a reliable and versatile accessory designed to enhance your workout experience. If you have a home gym, you know how expensive and space-consuming weight plates can be. You also know how annoying it is to switch between different weights or equipment for different exercises. That’s why I was excited to try out UClips, a universal gym clip that lets you attach any dumbbell to barbells, dip belts, and pulley systems.

UClips are U-shaped metal clips that have a 2" hole in the center on each side. This allows you to slide them onto an Olympic barbell sleeve or any other rod-like attachment. Then, you can hook any dumbbell handle into the clip. This way, you can repurpose your dumbbells and use them as weight plates for various exercises. In this comprehensive review, we will explore the features, performance, and overall value of the UClips Universal Gym Clips.

Design and Build Quality: The UClips Universal Gym Clips feature a thoughtful and robust design. Constructed with high-quality materials, these clips are built to withstand the demands of rigorous training sessions. The durable steel construction provides the necessary strength and stability to hold weights firmly in place, preventing any unwanted shifting or movement. The clips' sleek and compact design ensures compatibility with most standard barbell and dumbbell handles, making them a versatile addition to any fitness arsenal.

Performance and Versatility: When it comes to performance, the UClips Universal Gym Clips excel in providing a secure and hassle-free workout experience. The simple yet effective design allows for quick and easy attachment and removal of weight. Once secured, the clips firmly grip the weight plates, preventing any rattling or displacement, even during high-intensity exercises. This stability and reliability not only enhance safety but also allow for a smoother and more focused lifting experience.
Their compatibility with various barbell and dumbbell sizes makes them a practical choice for both home gyms and commercial fitness facilities.

User Experience: Using the UClips Universal Gym Clips provides a seamless and positive user
experience. The ease of attachment and removal makes transitioning between exercises quick and effortless. The clips' secure grip instills confidence, allowing you to focus on your workout rather than worrying about weight plate slippage or instability. Users appreciate the peace of mind that comes with knowing their weights are securely fastened, ensuring a safe and effective training session.
The compact size and lightweight nature of the UClips Universal Gym Clips make them highly portable, allowing you to take them with you wherever your fitness journey takes you. Additionally, their durable construction ensures long-term use without any compromise in performance.

Here are some of the pros and cons of UClips that I found after using them for a few weeks:
  • Pros: Versatile: You can use UClips with any dumbbell that has a round or hexagonal handle, regardless of the weight or shape. You can also use them with different equipment, such as barbells, dip belts, pulley systems, landmines, etc.
  • Easy to use: UClips are simple and intuitive to use. You just slide them onto the bar or attachment, hook the dumbbell handle into the clip, and lock it with a pin. You can also adjust the position of the clip along the bar to balance the weight distribution.
  • Durable: UClips are made of metal and lined with hard plastic on the inside. They are sturdy and can withstand heavy loads without bending or breaking.
  • Cons: Pricey: UClips are sold individually for $39.99 USD on their website This means you need to buy two of them if you want to use them on a barbell or other equipment that requires two weight plates. This can add up quickly if you want to have multiple pairs of UClips for different exercises.
  • Compatibility: UClips may not fit all dumbbells or equipment, depending on the shape and size of the handles or attachments. For example, some dumbbells may have handles that are too thick or too thin for the clip to hook securely. Some equipment may have attachments that are too wide or too narrow for the clip to slide onto.
Conclusion:
UClips are a useful and innovative product for home gym enthusiasts who want to make the most out of their dumbbells. They can help you increase the variety and intensity of your workouts without spending too much money or space on weight plates or other equipment. However, they may not be compatible with all types of dumbbells or equipment, so you should check the specifications before buying them.

Product Review:

The Freak Athlete Essentials Iron Tib Bar 3.0 is a game-changer for anyone looking to take their lower leg training to the next level. This innovative piece of equipment is designed to target and strengthen the anterior tibialis muscle, providing unparalleled benefits for athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and individuals recovering from lower leg injuries. In this review, we'll explore the features, performance, and overall value of the Iron Tib Bar 3.0.

Design and Build Quality: Built with meticulous attention to detail, the Iron Tib Bar 3.0 exudes durability and quality. The bar is crafted from solid steel, ensuring long-lasting performance even during the most demanding workouts. Its sleek and ergonomic design not only enhances aesthetics but also provides a comfortable engagement minimizing discomfort. The bar's compact size makes it convenient to store and carry, allowing you to bring it along to any training environment.

Performance and Functionality: When it comes to performance, the Iron Tib Bar 3.0 truly shines. Its unique design allows for precise and isolated targeting of the anterior tibialis muscle, which is crucial for improving lower leg strength, balance, and overall athletic performance. The ability to load plates, changing the resistance, allows it to accommodate different fitness levels and allows users to progressively challenge their muscles and track their progress over time (up to 150lbs!). This versatility ensures that the Iron Tib Bar 3.0 remains challenging and effective, regardless of your current fitness level.

The bar's balanced weight distribution enables controlled eccentric and concentric movements, maximizing muscle activation and promoting proper form. This leads to better muscle recruitment and reduces the risk of injuries associated with poor exercise technique. Whether you're an athlete seeking explosive power or an individual recovering from lower leg issues, the Iron Tib Bar 3.0 delivers exceptional functionality that produces noticeable results.

Benefits of Anterior Tibialis Strengthening:

  1. Injury Prevention: The anterior tibialis muscle, located in the front of the lower leg, plays a crucial role in maintaining proper foot and ankle alignment during movement. Strengthening this muscle helps stabilize the ankle joint and reduces the risk of injuries such as sprains or strains.

  2. Balance and Proprioception: Strong anterior tibialis muscles contribute to better balance and proprioception (the body's awareness of its position in space). This can enhance stability during various activities, such as walking, running, or changing directions.

  3. Shin Splint Prevention: Shin splints are a common overuse injury characterized by pain along the shinbone (tibia). Strengthening the anterior tibialis helps alleviate excessive stress on the shinbone by providing better support to the lower leg muscles and reducing the likelihood of developing shin splints.

  4. Performance Enhancement: The anterior tibialis is involved in dorsiflexion, which is the movement that brings the foot toward the shin. Strengthening this muscle can improve dorsiflexion range of motion, leading to more efficient and powerful movements during activities like sprinting, jumping, or squatting.

Benefits of Knees Over Toes Training:

  1. Functional Strength: Knees over toes training involves deliberately allowing the knees to move forward over the toes during exercises like squats or lunges. This technique helps develop functional strength in the muscles around the knees, including the quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes. It mimics the movement patterns often required in sports or daily activities, such as ascending or descending stairs or performing deep squats.

  2. Joint Health and Mobility: Allowing the knees to move over the toes helps maintain and improve joint health and mobility. It promotes flexibility in the ankles, knees, and hips, reducing stiffness and enhancing overall range of motion. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals who have limited mobility or stiffness in these joints.

  3. Injury Prevention: By strengthening the muscles around the knees and improving joint mobility, knees over toes training can help prevent knee-related injuries, such as ligament strains or tears. It encourages proper alignment and movement mechanics, reducing the risk of excessive stress or strain on the knee joint.

  4. Functional Transfer: The movements trained in knees over toes exercises often have a higher degree of functional transfer to real-life activities. The ability to move the knees over the toes safely and effectively can enhance athletic performance, agility, and overall movement quality in various sports and physical tasks.

User Experience: Using the Iron Tib Bar 3.0 is a pleasure from start to finish. The textured grip provides a secure hold, allowing you to focus on your workout without worrying about the bar slipping from your feet. The adjustable resistance is intuitive and easy to use similar to sliding plate on a barbell, ensuring seamless transitions between different intensity levels. Users have praised the bar's ability to effectively target and strengthen the anterior tibialis muscle, resulting in improved ankle stability, reduced risk of lower leg injuries, and enhanced athletic performance.

However, individuals who don't specifically require or prioritize anterior tibialis strengthening may find limited use for this product. For those who are looking to improve lower leg strength, balance, and athletic performance, the Iron Tib Bar 3.0 is a valuable investment.

Conclusion: The Freak Athlete Essentials Iron Tib Bar 3.0 is a standout product that delivers on its promise of superior lower leg training. With its durable construction, adjustable resistance, and ergonomic design, this bar provides exceptional functionality and performance. Users can expect to see tangible improvements in their lower leg strength, ankle stability, and overall athletic performance. While there are minor considerations to keep in mind, the Iron Tib Bar 3.0 remains an excellent investment for anyone serious about unlocking their leg power and achieving their fitness goals.

Battle Rope Buyers Guide

Battle ropes most commonly come in three lengths (30, 40 or 50 feet) and two thicknesses (1.5" and 2"). The size you should get depends on two main factors: your fitness goals, and the amount of space you have.

After all this testing and experimenting, here's what I've discovered matters with battle ropes:

  • Material
  • Length
  • Thickness

Material:
I'd recommend good Poly Dacron: Poly Dacron rope is made from polypropylene and dacron plastic fibers. These synthetic fibers are twisted into strands, with the Dacron providing the strength in the outer braid. Polypropylene provides a lightweight core and additional strength. Using polypropylene for the core reduces weight and cost and makes the rope lighter.

The main benefit of poly dacron is that it doesn't shed. Manila ropes perform great if you're only using them outside, but they are a little more expensive and they shed little fibers every time you use them, which can be a pain to clean up if you're inside. Manila ropes are also 10% to 25% more expensive than comparable polydac ropes. I'd only recommend manila if you want a more organic product (manila is made from hemp plant fibers) or if you only plan to use these outside.

How to tell between cheap and good polydac? I hate to say it, but price is the easiest way, as most manufacturers won't discuss what blend level they use. Our ropes are 80% Dacron, 20% Polypropylene, which we've found to be the optimum blend for durability and fluidity. Anything greater than 30% Polypropylene has that more fibrous feel.

Thickness
Thick ropes carry more weight, while longer ropes allow for a more fluid motion.
Thicker ropes require bigger hands and greater grip strength. If you're looking for high intensity, cardio blasting workouts, we recommend the 1.5" diameter battle rope. These ropes will allow you to go hard, maintain a solid grip, and will fit perfectly into a circuit training workout.
If it's muscles you’re after and you're prepared to perform a workout that feels more like a bench press than wind sprints the, 2.0" width battle rope is for you. These ropes are 35% larger than the 1.5" width ropes and require a larger hand and stronger grip to maintain control of the battle rope.

Length
Shorter ropes aren’t as fluid, but they allow for smaller spaces. Because your rope will essentially be folded in half at an anchor point, you need a straight line that is half the length of your rope. For a 50' rope you'll need 25 feet of clear space.
The most common length is 50 feet, followed by 40' and 30' respectively. A 50' battle rope leaves you with 25' in each arm, which is a great length for creating momentum-filled waves for a smooth, low-impact workout.

We recommend: All things being equal, and if you’re unsure of which one to get, we recommend the 50 foot length and 1.5" width. The longer length will be the most fluid and versatile, and the 1.5” grip will be the easiest to hold and use.

Safety Squat Bar Review: How it can Help Reduce Injury and Crush PRs

The Safety Squat Bar is one of our favorite specialty bars to use.  This bar is easy on the shoulders, which is especially helpful for powerlifters and those with a limited range of motion. That said, the SSB pretty much decimates every other part of the body.

Often times when people see the name "Safety" Squat Bar, they think the bar is easier to use. That, however, couldn't be further from the truth. So, just so I can put this idea to rest, the Safety Squat Bar is NOT easier than a traditional barbell squat. It's just different, and in some ways, much more difficult.

One of the details of the Safety Squat Bar that makes it quite a bit different from a standard barbell is the camber.

13 Reasons to/NOT to Buy Titan Safety Squat Bar V2 | Garage Gym Built
With a normal barbell, since it is straight (or at least should be,) the weight is directed along the path of where the bar is on your back. With an SSB, the weight is directed wherever the sleeves are in relation to the ground.

The majority of time, what the SSB is trying to do is dump you forward. This forces you to fight by keeping tighter and staying more upright. The people most affected by the SSB are low-bar squatters and it can take them some time to get used to the bar.   The primary benefit from this perspective is that it significantly decreases stress on the upper extremities, particularly the shoulders, elbows, and wrists.

The way the bar is designed, there is a padded section that sits around your neck with two handles extending over each shoulder. This allows you to easily hold the handles directly out in front of your body. There is no need to externally rotate the shoulders, which is something many people have issues with on a traditional straight bar. The length of the handles depends on the bar you purchase and on personal preference.

So if you have shoulder or elbow pain while back squatting with a straight bar, or if you have wrist pain when front squatting, this bar will help you tremendously.

BUT, it's not just the upper extremities that it helps. When squatting with the safety squat bar, your spine position will actually be more vertical. It looks more like a front squat or a high-bar back squat. This positioning minimizes shear forces on the lower back and also allows for improved range of motion through the hips, knees, and ankles.

One thing that is an improvement on the Titan SSB V2 over what other SSB offers is that the sleeves are an Olympic Sleeve, meaning they take standard collars instead of having to use axle collars. This means calibrated plates fit well on the bar without too much play as well. Honestly, all bars should use the standard Olympic sleeve size and companies are starting to adopt this.

13 Reasons to/NOT to Buy Titan Safety Squat Bar V2 | Garage Gym BuiltThe Titan Fitness SSB v2 pad is just right. It's made of a very dense foam that actually looks like really thick carpet padding. The covering has a great feel to it – it's grippy, yet supple. The stitching on the pad is very well done, adding to the high quality look and feel. The velcro used to secure the covering is really strong and it doesn't peel in any direction.

As you use this bar and become stronger, your ability to stay upright under a straight bar is going to be improved. Similarly, you're probably going to be able to hit depth easier with a safety squat bar because it does promote a more ‘sit down, not back' movement. This can also translate well to your straight-bar technique, as you should have a greater range of motion

The biggest and possibly only drawback of this bar is the finish, which is known to flake after sliding plates on and off the sleeves for an extended amount of time. This completely cosmetic issue has no bearing whatsoever on performance. To be fair, specialty bars in general leave something to be desired when it comes to sleeve finishes. Most of them are powder coated, which will also chip and flake, so it’s hard to knock Titan Fitness too hard on this. Still, it’s something to consider if you’re a stickler about such things.
